BEAM (Baccus Elementary Academic Mentors) is helping second grade students at Baccus right now. The highly successful program involves helping at-risk students, one-on-one during the school year. Adult volunteers are asked to give one hour per week (30 minutes if you can't spare an hour) to one student. The volunteer would help a student bring their reading skills to grade level or beyond. Community volunteers are used in the BEAM program, which has had phenomenal success rates keeping at-risk students in school by improving their performance in class. It is a proven fact that increased reading skills helps keep students in the classroom. Volunteers can request a time convenient for them. They will meet with the same student each time they come into the school. Students and mentors develop long lasting relationships, which are important to at-risk students. BEAM is beneficial in a number of ways-keeping students in school who are at-risk; helping volunteers understand the school and giving volunteers a good feeling of service to their community.
