Courtney Overstreet, who recently graduated from Granbury High School after serving as president of the Granbury FFA, was selected to receive a $16,000 scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show.
“When asked to describe the ideal FFA member one just needs to look at Courtney’s resume,” commented GHS teacher and FFA sponsor Nate Newton. “She has been involved in the animal program, judging contests, leadership contests, local, district, area, and state levels of participation within FFA not to mention she excelled at the local level as an outstanding chapter, district, and area officer.”
In April, Overstreet received the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award for excellence in academics, leadership, and agricultural work experience. In addition to leading the Granbury FFA, her accomplishments also include serving as FFA Area VIII vice president and FFA Lake Whitney District president. She participated in range evaluation and was a state qualifier for four years.
Overstreet will be attending Texas A&M University to major in agricultural leadership. She plans to continue her involvement with FFA and impacting student by becoming an agricultural science teacher.
Since its beginning in 1932, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has committed approximately $283 million to scholarships, research, endowments, calf scramble participants, junior show exhibitors, school art participants, and other educational and youth programs. Of that total, the show has committed more than $165 million in direct educational program support, since the first scholarship was awarded in 1957.
All recipients of the scholarships must demonstrate academic potential, citizenship/leadership and financial need, and must attend a Texas college or university.
