Granbury schoolchildren have had an opportunity to receive free books during Summer 2012 from the Brawner Bookmobile, which has been distributing books twice weekly at Healthy Kids summer lunch sites. Teachers have also been utilizing new iPods on Wheels listening stations.
The idea was developed by Lynda Foster, reading specialist at Brawner Intermediate School. Foster remembered a neighborhood bookmobile operating in her community when she was growing up, and she wanted to provide the same opportunity for Granbury children.
The bookmobile has been visiting Healthy Kids sites in the Granbury City Park and Rancho Brazos subdivision during lunchtime. In addition to providing the books, Foster and school intervention specialist Lorna Cockerham have been spending time reading to students.
Pictured above, students have also had an opportunity to use the school’s iPods on Wheels to enjoy quality children’s literature read to them by fluent readers – with books such as Frog and Toad, The Day Jimmy’s Boat Ate the Wash, and Owl Moon. The listening stations will also be available during the school year in the student reading lounge.
The iPods on Wheels project was funded through a grant by the Granbury ISD Education Foundation.
