Granbury students who will be in grades 4-8 have a free opportunity to attend the Johnny Perkins Football Camp on August 1-2, 2012, at the Pirate Pavilion at Granbury High School. The camp is named for the GHS football great who went on to play in the National Football League.
The camp will be held 9:00-11:00 A.M. on both days.
Leading the camp will be Coach Terry Drake, a longtime friend and teammate of Perkins, along with former New England Patriot lineman Devon Wyman and other close friends of the Granbury legend.
Perkins, who passed away in April 2007, was an All-State running back at GHS and an All-American wide receiver at Abilene Christian University before being drafted by the New York Giants in 1977. He played in the NFL from 1977 until 1984 compiling 163 catches for 2,611 yards and 18 touchdowns. His professional career also included 8 playoff receptions for 182 yards and 2 touchdowns.
After retiring from professional football, Perkins returned to Granbury. He was the voice of the Granbury Pirates for ten years on the local cable channel.
The field at Pirate Stadium was named in his honor in September 2007.
