All Granbury ISD schools will soon be participating in the Rachel’s Challenge program, named for a victim of the Columbine High School tragedy with the goal to inspire, instruct, and enable students to bring positive change to their school atmosphere.
The program exists to equip and motivate individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion.
Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Through her writings, she stated that “if one person will go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” Her acts of kindness coupled with the contents of her six diaries became the foundation for the program, which is used in schools throughout the United States.
Granbury school officials are planning a community-wide event on October 3 for parents, guardians, and community members to learn about the program.
The initiative is partially funded through a grant from the Granbury ISD Education Foundation.
