Mariah Rendeiro, a senior at Granbury High School, received a major award from the Walden Woods Project, an environmental organization founded by musician Don Henley. The awards ceremony was held July 25, 2012, in Boston.
Rendeiro was one of two students receiving the Environmental Leadership Award for her science research project “Ironing Out Global Warming.”
The Walden Woods Project preserves the land, literature, and legacy of author, poet, and philosopher Henry David Thoreau to foster an ethic of environmental stewardship and social responsibility. The project achieves this mission through the integration of conservation, education, research, and advocacy. The organization was founded in 1990 by Henley, a Grammy-award winning recording artist – both with The Eagles and as a solo artist.
Also honored was former U.S. president Bill Clinton with the first-ever Global Environmental Leadership Award in recognition of his administration’s environmental efforts and for his establishing the Clinton Climate Initiative following his eight years in the White House.
It has been a whirlwind year for Rendeiro as a result of her science project. From the Granbury ISD district science fair in January, the GHS student was among several to advance to the Fort Worth Regional Science Fair on February 26-27 and among a select group that went to the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair on March 29-April 1 in San Antonio.
At the regional fair, Rendeiro won an all-expense paid trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held during May in Pittsburgh. She was only the second Granbury student to attend the premier global science competition.
During the international science fair, Rendeiro was selected to attend INESPO (The International Environment and Sustainability Olympiad) to be held June 2-7, 2013, in The Netherlands.
