Celebration was on center stage at the Granbury ISD convocation held August 20, 2012, in the Granbury High School auditorium. The annual event includes all district employees to begin the new school year.
Kicking off the program were several Granbury High School students. United States and Texas flags were posted by a JROTC color guard, and student council vice president Jessie Fallin led the group in the pledges to the flags. An ensemble of GHS choir seniors sang the national anthem. Student council president Mikayla Carpenter delivered the invocation.
Delivering remarks were superintendent Dr. James Largent, school board president Micky Shearon, and GISD Education Foundation president Barbara Townsend, who all praised the hard work of all employees and also challenged the group to set goals and expectations for the new year through support of students and other employees.
Assistant superintendent Carol Howard introduced Secondary Teacher of the Year Donna Dumas and Elementary Teacher of the Year Kristen Thigpen. Dumas teaches at Granbury Middle School, while Thigpen is at Oak Woods School.
The keynote speaker was Jason Young, a former Southwest Airlines manager who learned the value of a successful workplace culture and customer service. His energetic presentation encouraged everyone to keep a positive outlook in order to maximize their impact on students.
Community coordinator Kathryne Bosco, representing H-E-B grocery store, spoke to the staff about their commitment to education, including rewarding top teachers and supporting school activities. H-E-B hosted a breakfast for all district employees prior to convocation and also provided gift cards to each school through a “Principal’s Olympics” (pictured above).
Also addressing the assembled group was Lake Granbury Medical Center chief executive officer David Orcutt, who stressed the partnership between the hospital and the school district. LGMC also provided spirit shirts for all school district employees.
