In the playoff match, the Granbury girls won the first game 25-21 and the third game 25-23 over Burleson. The Lady Elks, though, rallied to take the second 17-25, the fourth 23-25, and the tie-breaker 10-15 to advance to the regional tournament.
“The Lady Pirates had a fantastic run,” commented head coach Tammy Clark. “I am very proud of the girls' improvements from start to finish and their intensity and determination throughout the season.”
The girls ended district play with a 12-2 record, with their only district losses coming against Aledo. The team defeated former district rival Cleburne in the bi-district playoff round (25-21, 25-23, 25-19) on October 30 at Saginaw Chisholm Trail High School and Birdville (25-14, 25-19, 25-19) in the area round on November 1 at Saginaw Boswell High School.
The 2012 varsity court consisted of Karis Beasley, Alexis Carpenter, Sydney Carpenter, Shelby Cline, Blair Cowden, Breanna Crain, Aubrey Ezell, Shannon Helm, Hannah Hiler, Paige Holt, Amy Mendoza, Shelby Shade, and Jenna Underwood. Moving up to varsity squad for the playoffs were Taylor DeYoung, Makenna Martin, Whitney Matos, and Jettin Murphy.
“We had a special group of seniors,” Clark said, noting that all seven – Alexis Carpenter, Cline, Cowden, Helm, Holt, Mendoza, and Underwood – have received Academic All-State recognition from both the Texas High School Coaches Association and the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
Clark is already looking forward to next season. “We have started offseason training and have a lot of talent moving up,” remarked the coach. “The core of returning varsity players is strong, and they had a fantastic showing by stepping into critical roles.”
