GRANBURY ISD SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES ELEMENTARY REZONING

December 16, 2008

The Granbury ISD Board of Trustees met for its regular monthly meeting on December 15, 2008, and approved the rezoning and grade configuration of elementary and intermediate campuses for the 2009-10 school year.

Under the new elementary boundaries, there will be five attendance zones for students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.  The attendance zones are:
  • Acton Elementary School
  • Baccus Elementary School
  • Mambrino School
  • Oak Woods Elementary School
  • Roberson Elementary School (PK-2)/Brawner Intermediate School (3-5)

Board members elected to reconfigure Emma Roberson Elementary School as a PK-2 campus and Brawner Intermediate School as a 3-5 campus.  Acton Elementary School, Nettie Baccus Elementary School, and Oak Woods Intermediate School will all serve students in grades PK-5.  Mambrino School is already configured as a PK-5 campus.  However, the board will examine the feasibility of making both Roberson and Brawner into PK-5 campuses for future school years.

Trustees approved the proposed attendance zones with some changes:  students in Lakewood Hills will attend Oak Woods, while students in Rancho Brazos and Grand Harbor will go to Acton.  The proposal would have had all of those students in the Roberson-Brawner attendance zone.

Maps and other information regarding the new attendance zones and grade alignment will be available in the near future at www.granburyisd.org/rezoning.

In personnel matters, Superintendent William Harris announced his retirement effective at the end of June 2009.

The board approved the academic year calendar for the 2009-10 school year for both Granbury ISD and STARS Academy.  The calendars are posted on the school district’s website at www.granburyisd.org/parentcenter.  Once linked to the Parent Center, click on Academic Year Calendars.  Board members also approved a waiver request to the Texas Education Agency to allow for five professional development days for teachers.

Other reports were also given to the board:

  • Curriculum Director Sharon Williams provided an update on the Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) for the 2007-08 school year.  In 2008, Granbury ISD had seven Recognized campuses, and nine schools received Gold Performance recognition from the Texas Education Agency.
  • A representative of the accounting firm of Pattillo, Brown & Hill, L.L.P. reviewed the audit report for the year ending August 31, 2008.  The board approved the report, which offered an unqualified opinion regarding the district’s financial condition.  A copy of the report is available on the school district’s website at www.granburyisd.org/business.
  • Executive Director of Human Resources Troy Green reported that one hundred percent of teachers in the district were designated as Highly Qualified.  As part of the No Child Left Behind Act and state regulations, school districts are required to measure and report annually on the percent of Highly Qualified teachers.
  • Representatives of First Financial Administrators, the district’s third party administrator for voluntary insurance benefits available to employees, reported on new IRS regulations that are effecting 403(b) retirement plans.
  • Executive Director of Finance Sharay Boynton reviewed the October 2008 and November 2008 financial statements as well as the November 2008 investment report.

In other action, board members approved one employee request for catastrophic sick leave.  In addition to approving budget amendments and minutes from the last regular meeting and a workshop, purchases and bids were approved for technology items, copy paper, printing and copying services, charter bus services, and a bus mobile DVR monitoring system.

The board will meet for a regular monthly meeting on Monday, January 19, 2009.  A special meeting will likely be called in early January for trustees to begin the process for selecting a new superintendent.  Board meetings are held in the GISD Board Room, which is located next to the Administration Building at 600 W. Pearl Street.
