AMS STUDENTS SALUTE TROOPS

January 18, 2010

Students at Acton Middle School held a patriotic assembly on January 15, 2010.

With a theme centered on the United States flag, the assembly included performances by choir and drama students and a poetry reading.  Representatives of the local chapter of the Veterans for Foreign Wars spoke to the students about flag etiquette as well as the historical significance of “Taps.”  Students also observed a traditional folding of the flag.

Student council and teen leadership students, who were dressed in red, challenged their classmates to wear red on Fridays in support of American servicemen and servicewomen.

The assembly also served as the kickoff for “Hearts for Our Troops” sponsored by the student council.  The project involves collecting food items to be sent in care packages to U.S. military personnel serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Some of the recipients will have connections to Granbury and Hood County.
