Caden Davis, a fifth grader at Oak Woods School, recently was named the winner of an essay contest sponsored by the Luminant Scholar Program.

During a presentation at the school on November 10, 2009, Luminant Scholar Director Robert Gentry was on hand to announce that Davis won the contest and will receive a $1,000 U.S. savings bond to help with future educational expenses.  In addition, each of Davis’s classmates received a “Making Texas Shine” t-shirt.

The program aims to increase environmental awareness among Texas public school students.  Beginning in September 2009, fifth graders in several area school districts were invited to enter the essay contest answering the question, “How can I protect the environment?”

Oak Woods School still has the opportunity to receive a $5,000 grant.  Luminant, which is a competitive power generation company, will award a grant to three schools representing the best overall essays from among the participating districts.
