PIRATE BAND COMPETES AT AREA MARCHING CONTEST

October 26, 2009

The Granbury High School Pirate Band competed at the UIL Area B marching band contest on October 24, 2009, at Pennington Field in Bedford.

Although the band was not selected to advance to the state contest, band director Kyle Maxwell commented that the students had worked extremely hard preparing the marching show.  “Since the area contest is only held every other year for Class 4A, it was a great honor for our school to be selected,” Maxwell said.

Twenty-three bands from Class 4A high schools, including seven advancing from the Region 7, took part in the competition.  Advancing to the state level contest were Carrollton-Farmers Branch Newman Smith, Mansfield Legacy, Frisco Wakeland, and Fort Worth Southwest.

At the regional competition on October 17, 2009, the Granbury band received a First Division rating for its performance of the Native American-themed marching show entitled “Tribal Elements.”  The band also won third place at the recent USSBA North Texas Regional Marching Competition held on October 3, 2009.  Both contests were held in Burleson.

Leading the band are drum majors Kevin Keating, Ashley Owens, and Kimberly Gomez.  Directors are Maxwell, Tahl Kirk, Tim Stevens, and Pam Carver.

The band is currently working on its annual Light Show to be held immediately following the Granbury-Everman football game on November 6, 2009.
