Dallas Cowboys quarterback Stephen McGee pumped up students at Mambrino School during a TAKS pep rally on February 18, 2011.
McGee spoke to the students about succeeding in life and about performing well on the state exams. He encouraged the students to prepare, eat a nourishing breakfast, and respect others.
The quarterback left several memorabilia items for teachers to reward students who try their hardest.
A native of Burnet, McGee played for the Texas A&M Aggies before being drafted by the Cowboys in 2009. As the third-string quarterback, he nearly led the team to a victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Christmas Day 2010 when both Tony Romo and Jon Kitna were injured.
The pep rally also included a skit and video presentation by teachers and staff. In addition, principal Rebecca Johnson promised a reward if students help the school achieve an Exemplary or Recognized state accountability rating.
Johnson also announced that, in honor of McGee, staff members contributed $100 toward the school’s Relay for Life team to benefit the American Cancer Society.
Attending the pep rally were third, fourth, and fifth graders who will be taking the state tests in March and April.
