“It is only the second time in school history for the tennis team to advance to regionals,” commented head coach Jeff Bramlett, who is assisted by Denise Scott. “We finished the season 12-2, which is one of the best records ever to be accomplished at Granbury.”
The Region I-4A tournament will be held October 28-29 at the Weeks Park Tennis Center in Wichita Falls.
During district play, the GHS team posted wins over Cleburne (13-6), Joshua (17-2), Everman (19-0), Arlington Seguin (15-4), Crowley (10-9), and Burleson (15-4) before suffering a single 11-8 loss to Mansfield Summit in the regular season finale. The team posted an 11-5 victory over Burleson during a semifinals match on October 14.
Bramlett said the team had faced adversity during the season. “We lost two of our top players to injury, and the whole team stepped up collectively to help carry the burden.”
The head coach said the squad featured a strong girls’ team, which only lost ten of 81 matches played this fall. He also praised the boys, who stepped up in the finals and won several matches with two newcomers in the lineup. The mixed doubles teams were equally dominating, Bramlett said, as they only dropped two district matches during the season and were an inspiration to the rest of the team when they won a convincing victory over Burleson in the semifinals game.
Held in the fall, team tennis involves a combination of matches featuring boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles, and mixed doubles.
