GRANBURY ISD SCHOOL BOARD BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW SUPERINTENDENT

January 10, 2012

The Granbury ISD Board of Trustees held a special called meeting on January 9, 2012, in order to begin the search for a new Superintendent of Schools.

The school board elected not to hire a consulting firm as was done in the last search conducted in 2009.  Instead, the board will accept applications, and those will be screened by a three-member committee of the board, explained board president Charlie Cloud.  The committee will then report their findings to the full school board.

Trustees also will be soliciting input from parents, the community, district employees, and students through an online survey asking respondents to rank various qualities that they would like to see in the next school leader.  The results will be used to establish a superintendent profile as the board reviews candidates.

“This will be the most important decision that this board will make, and we want to get it right,” said Cloud.  “The search will include soliciting input from district employees, parents, and the public.  Community involvement in this process is critical to the selection of the right person to lead the school district.”

At the regular meeting on January 16 and an expected special meeting on January 23, trustees will take further action in the search process.  This will include setting minimum qualifications for candidates as well as officially appointing the application review committee.

Cloud also outlined a tentative timeline for the search process:  survey, January 11-20; post positions and receive applications, January 24-February 10; application review, February 11-19; first-round interviews, February 27-March 2; and second-round interviews, March 5-9.  Under the timeline, the board could name a lone finalist as early as March 19.  State law then requires the board to publicly disclose the name of the finalist and wait twenty-one days before taking final action on hiring.

The board will utilize the standard superintendent contract outlined by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), according to Cloud.

Superintendent Ron Mayfield, who has led the school district since 2009, announced his retirement in December.  Mayfield’s retirement is effective at the end of the school year.

Board meetings are held in the GISD Board Room, which is located next to the Administration Building at 600 W. Pearl Street.  Information related to the superintendent search will be posted on the district website at www.granburyisd.org/search.
