SPEECH DUO QUALIFIES FOR STATE TFA TOURNEY

Granbury High School seniors Stephen Carver and Stefanie Mundhenk qualified for the Texas Forensic Association state tournament during an invitational speech and debate meet in San Angelo on February 11, 2012.

 

Mundhenk earned her spot in Lincoln-Douglas debate, placing second at the San Angelo tournament and posting an undefeated record until the final round.  Meanwhile, Carver placed third in original oratory, earning the requisite number of points to advance to the state competition.

 

Pirate Debate coach Shyller McGuire also selected senior Leah Derrington and junior Garrett Williams to participate in the TFA state tourney set for March 1-3 at Amarillo High School.  Derrington will compete in poetry interpretation, while Williams will be participating in the Senate during the congressional debate event.

 

Students winning awards at the San Angelo meet were:

  • Congressional Debate:  Garrett Williams, seventh.
  • Duet Acting:  Stephen Carver and Leah Derrington, fifth.
  • Impromptu Speaking:  Izzy Woods, fourth.
  • Original Oratory:  Stephen Carver, third.
  • Prose Interpretation:  Leah Derrington, first.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debate:  Stefanie Mundhenk, second.
