ACCOUNTING TEAM THREE-PEATS AS STATE CHAMPS

May 24, 2012

The Granbury High School accounting team won a third-straight gold medal at the UIL Academic State Meet held May 21-22, 2012, at the University of Texas at Austin. The students were among a group of six from GHS competing at the contest.

The accounting team of Quade Gibson, Connor Hammond, Evangelina Oviedo, and Kyle Shanahan dominated in taking the top prize. The students outscored Cleburne, the second-place Class 4A team, by 119 points.

On an individual basis, Hammond led the team and won the gold medal. Gibson and Oviedo tied for third.

Placing first meant the team successfully defended the state title earned the last two years. Last year’s team included Brandy Curry and Kirk Wallace along with Gibson and Hammond. The first championship team in 2010 was composed of Brandy Curry, Kevin Massey, Joe Wallace, and Kirk Wallace – who were the school’s first-ever state championship academic team.

The victory was a fitting tribute to team coach Connie Stone, who led all three teams. The GHS business teacher is retiring after thirty years at the high school. In December, Stone was honored by the state organization with the 2011 UIL Sponsor Excellence Award in recognition of her service as the school’s UIL academic coordinator since 1983.

Also representing GHS at the state tournament were Stefanie Mundhenk, who won silver in Lincoln-Douglas debate, and Kelly Burns, who placed fourth in editorial writing.

The University Interscholastic League offers the most comprehensive literary and academic competitive program in the nation with more than a half million students participating. These activities, which exist to complement the academic curriculum, are designed to motivate students as they acquire higher levels of knowledge, to challenge students to confront issues of importance, and to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills.
