Granbury High School band member Zach Morgan earned Outstanding Soloist honors after receiving a Division I superior rating at the UIL Texas State Solo-Ensemble Contest held March 26 and 28, 2012, in Austin.
It was a banner year for the French horn player, who just completed his junior year at GHS. In January, he earned a slot in the TMEA Symphony Orchestra – a top ensemble comprised mainly of Class 5A instrumental musicians.
By advancing to the state ensembles, Morgan became the first GHS student to qualify for the state instrumental groups since 1994, according to band director Mark Eastin.
The incoming GHS senior also received a superior rating at the state solo and ensemble contest in 2010, when he was a freshman at Crossland Ninth Grade Center.
Morgan also recently helped set a Guinness world record. On May 19, along with fellow band member Joe Norton, Morgan was among French horn players from all over the world attending the International Horn Symposium at the University of North Texas in Denton. Over six hundred players set the world record for the largest French horn ensemble.
Also taking part in the state solo and ensemble competition were GHS percussionists Brandon Danz-Shepherd and Garrett Williams.
