About CTE Director Jimmy Dawson

    Dawson Family

Jimmy Dawson is just beginning his work with the Granbury ISD as the Director of the Career and Technical Education Department.   Mr. Dawson succeeded long-time Granbury educator Judy Gentry after she retired in December of 2019.   Jimmy Dawson came to Granbury in the spring of 2003 as the Principal of Granbury Middle School.  Mr. Dawson served at GMS for 4 years, and helped GMS to it's first "Recognized" rating in the school's existence.  After one short year as a State Farm Insurance and Financial Services Agent, he became the Principal at Acton Middle School in 2008.   AMS celebrated their "Exemplary" rating by the Texas Education Agency in 2011, and the campus worked to continue the "Exemplary" model daily throughout the 12 years Jimmy Dawson was the principal. In 2016, AMS was designated as a "Texas School To Watch" by the Texas Middle School Association and honored at the National Schools to Watch Conference in Washington DC in June of 2017.  Mr. Dawson attributes the success to a wonderful group of teachers who are dedicated and passionate for student learning. Now, Jimmy Dawson is taking his 20 years of school leadership into supporting the students and staff at Granbury High School as the Director of CTE to prepare students for College, Careers, Military, and beyond.

Jimmy Dawson grew up in Canyon, Texas where he graduated high school in 1988.  Both his parents received their education degrees, and later opened their own Insurance and Financial Company where they retired from after 25 years of service.  Mr. Dawson has been married for 27 years to his wife, Leah, who serves as the Librarian at Acton Elementary. He has two wonderful children, Drew (21) & Delaney (18).  He attended Abilene Christian University and received a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education (1992). Mr. Dawson continued with his master's program while coaching and teaching at Borger ISD.   He received his master's degree from West Texas A&M University (1996) and then attended Texas Tech University to complete his Superintendent Certification in 2000.

Mr. Dawson has served four years as Middle School Assistant Principal in Borger, Texas, four years Elementary Principal in Plainview, Texas, and 16 years as Middle School Principal.  He was honored twice by the Plainview Daily Herald as "Principal of the Year", nominated twice for Tarleton State's Effective Schools Instructional Leader award, and 2009 received the TSU Effective Schools "Instructional Leadership Award".   In 2011, he was honored as a semi-finalist by HEB for the Principal Excellence in Education Award. Mr. Dawson has served on the Hood County United Way Board and has chaired the allocations committee in recent years. In 2018, the Hood County United Way awarded Mr. Dawson the "Because We Care" award for his Day of Service initiative at AMS.  Also, Acton Middle School recognized him with the Distinguished Administrator Award from the Texas Music Educators Association for his support of the fine arts programs.

In his spare time, he has completed 12 half marathons before a hip replacement forced him to hit the elliptical.   Jimmy has a private pilot's license with over 280 hours of flying time and enjoys being on the lake whenever time allows. He really enjoys his family time with his wife and two children doing anything they can as a family making fun memories.

Mr. Dawson has been quoted by saying, "It is my pleasure to serve the students, faculty, parents, and community of Granbury ISD.
