Campus Spelling Bee Guidelines
All of the guidelines listed below are in accordance with Scripps Rules for Local Spelling Bees.
2016 Rules for Local Spelling Bees
Participants
Any student in grades K-8 can participate in the Area, Regional, State, and National Bee. The only rule is that an eighth grader cannot have reached his/her 15th birthday on or before August 31st.
Classroom Bees
Each classroom (K-5) will conduct their own classroom bee to determine who will represent his/her class in the campus bee. This class bee will be conducted orally in rounds using the Scripps grade-level lists as provided on the Spell It website. Students should NOT be allowed to use paper or pencil.
Each classroom (6-8) will conduct their own classroom bee to determine who will represent his/her grade level in the campus bee. This class bee will be conducted in writing using the Scripps grade-level lists as provided on the Spell It website.
Campus Bees
One representative from each classroom in K-5 and five representatives per grade level in 6-8 should be allowed to participate in the campus bee. In the event of a tie, more representatives may participate in the campus bee. Classroom bees may also name one alternate in case the winner is unable to participate in the campus bee. Permission slips and Scripps campus word lists for grades 1-8 will be sent home with all participants.
The campus bee should follow the Local Spelling Bee Rules and be conducted in rounds. Students should NOT be allowed to use paper or pencil.
Area Bee
Each campus will send one representative to the Area Bee for competition.
