Alexander
Call, a fifth grader at Oak Woods School, won the Area Spelling Bee held February 5,
2015.
The area contest pitted campus-level winners from seven
Granbury campuses. Call and Averie
Coffman, a fourth grader at Brawner Intermediate School, battled for 18 rounds
before he emerged the victor.
Other competitors were: Spencer Burnfield, a fourth grader at Acton
Elementary School; Jody Keahey, a fifth grader at Mambrino School; Ava
Williamson, a fourth grader at Baccus Elementary School; Aleksei Sisco, an
eighth grader at Granbury Middle School; Tiffany Wynne, a seventh grader at
Acton Middle School.
Wynne won the competition the last two years, when
she was a sixth grader at AMS and a fifth grader at AES.
As the Hood County area champion, Call will advance
to the Star-Telegram Regional Spelling Bee scheduled for March at Texas
Christian University in Fort Worth. That
contest will feature more than thirty contestants who won at the area
level. The regional winner will have an
opportunity to compete at the national competition to be held in Washington,
D.C. in May.
The campus and district spelling bees were open to
all students under the age of sixteen who had not passed beyond the eighth
grade.
