Summer School Update - June 18, 2020

  • Parents/Guardians,

We have had a great start to summer school, we’re going strong, and we are looking forward to the next 5 weeks!

With much guidance from the state we were able to have in person summer school.  We are delighted to see so many faces in person at summer school, as well as working with students remotely/virtually at home.

Here are few other summer school reminders that we have had in place:

    • In accordance with state guidance, arrival and dismissal are staggered:
      • Students that are picked up are released first, to grab a lunch (if they chose) and go.  Please arrive as close to 11am as possible to pick up your student.
      • Bus riders are released next by grade level and have time to eat lunch before loading buses.
      • 7:30am doors open
      • Breakfast from 7:30am-8am
      • Instruction begins at 8am - if your student is being dropped off and not eating school breakfast they may arrive closer to 8am.  No later than 8am please.
      • Instructional time 8am - 11am.  Lunch begins at 11am - staggered by grade level students are released.
    • Transportation is available.  Check the GISD website for summer bus routes or call for assistance.
    • The district is closed the week of July 4th.  No summer school June 29th - July 2nd.  Summer school resumes July 6th.
    • Due to health guidelines, water fountains are not accessible.  Students are allowed to bring a disposable water bottle with them.  Their name will be written on their water bottle and may not be shared.
    • Dress code - summer guidelines are consistent with school year dress code based on grade level.

Here is a summary of practices we are using to mitigate COVID-19 spread, based on the best practices and guidance from TEA (Texas Education Agency).

    • Health & Hygiene practices (to name a few):
      • Teachers and staff self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms daily.
      • Daily screening/temperature checks for students.
      • Hand sanitizer is located at each entrance for students, teachers, and staff to use as they enter the building. Hand sanitizer is also available in every classroom, and students and teachers are encouraged to sanitize hands frequently.
      • Staff and students are encouraged to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue.
      • Students are instructed in good handwashing techniques (soap and water for 20 seconds) and given frequent opportunities to wash their hands.
      • In applying minimum standards for allowable space, classroom sizes are small.
      • Masks are encouraged but optional for all staff and students.
      • We have instituted more frequent cleaning practices, including additional cleaning by janitorial staff, as well as cleaning throughout the day.

Any student, teacher, or staff member living with someone who experiences any of the symptoms of COVID-19, whether they have a positive COVID-19 test or not, should self-isolate until the below conditions have been met. If they do not experience any COVID-19 symptoms during that period, they can return to summer school. If they experience symptoms, they must self-isolate until the conditions outlined by the Texas Education Agency have been met.

    • COVID-19 Symptoms for Screening
    • Cough or Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Chills or Repeated shaking with chills
    • Muscle pain
    • Headache
    • Sore throat
    • Loss of taste or smell
    • Diarrhea
    • Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit
    • Known close contact with a person who is lab confirmed to have COVID-19

Thank you very much for the opportunity to work with your students each day!  If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact summer school administrators at 817-408-4600.
