Does GISD perform COVID-19 testing?
At this time, GISD is not performing COVID-19 testing.
What if a student/staff tests positive for COVID-19?
According to the flowchart, student/staff who test positive for COVID-19 must stay home.
Student/staff should submit copy of positive test results to home campus.
When can a student/staff return to school?
According to the flowchart, student/staff with COVID-19 symptoms, may return after at least 5 days have passed since symptom onset, and fever free 24 hours, and other symptoms have improved.
According to the flowchart, student/staff member who test positive but do not have any COVID-19 symptoms must stay home until at least 5 days from day tested.
Student/staff should submit copy of positive test results to home campus.
What about COVID-19 absences?
Students: When a student tests positive for COVID-19 or becomes symptomatic, they will stay home for 5 days or until the conditions for returning to school are met. In accordance with compulsory attendance laws and the Texas Education Agency's required process, absences due to illness will initially be counted as "unexcused." Absences due to illness will be changed to "excused" with a doctor's note or proof of a confirmed COVID-positive test.
Staff: When staff tests positive for COVID-19, they will stay home for 5 days or until the conditions for returning to school are met. Absences due to illness will be covered by the staff member's personal sick leave.
What about direct exposure or close contact?
Students identified as a close contact to a test-confirmed positive individual are not required to stay at home as long as they remain asymptomatic, but parents may choose to voluntarily keep their student at home.
Is the district tracking positive cases?
Campuses (nurse, principal, or director) report positive cases as they occur.
The district administration reports the weekly total number of positive cases to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
