Emma Roberson Elementary School showcased new “experience rooms” on January 29, 2020, that will be used when campus transitions to an Early Learning Academy offering full-day pre-kindergarten for qualifying students beginning with the 2020-21 school year.

The unveiling of first two rooms – with camping and zoo themes – took place during “Breakfast with the Board” with Granbury ISD school board trustees, administrators, Granbury ISD Education Foundation board members, and community leaders.

The new Emma Roberson Early Learning Academy will serve all pre-kindergarten students in the school district.  All other elementary schools will have students in grades K-5.  This includes neighboring Brawner Elementary School, which will be a full elementary campus picking up grades K-2 from Roberson.

Principal Kellie Lambert outlined the vision to implement experience-based learning that it structured and academic with high rigor.  The campus will focus on expanding students’ vocabulary through the immersed environment that provides rich learning opportunities.  Several staff members, administrators, and school trustees have visited Mansfield ISD’s Academy for Early Learners for ideas and strategies for implementation of the Granbury campus.

“Education is the key that unlocks doors,” commented GISD superintendent Dr. Jeremy Glenn as he praised the school board for funding the full-day pre-kindergarten program that seeks to provide early academic intervention for economically disadvantaged students.

For pre-kindergarten, most children must meet family income guidelines and be four years old on or before September 1.

Students who are eligible for pre-kindergarten are:

  • unable to speak and comprehend English, limited-English proficient (LEP); or
  • educationally disadvantaged (eligible to participate in the national free or reduced price lunch program); or
  • homeless; or
  • child of an active military parent of the U.S. armed forces; or
  • child of a member of the U.S. armed forces injured or killed while serving on active duty.

For the 2020-21 school year, the academy is also planned to accept children of GISD employees on a tuition basis.

Enrollment in the full-day pre-kindergarten will begin with Kindergarten Roundup on Wednesday, April 1 from 8:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. Parents should bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate, shot records, and Social Security card.  In addition, they should also bring proof of residence such as a utility bill.
