"School Counselors: Helping Build Better Humans" is the theme of the National School Counselors’ Week, which is being celebrated February 3-7, 2020.
The American School Counselor Association (ASCA), which is affiliated with the Texas School Counselor Association (TSCA) and Texas Counselor Association (TCA), sets aside the first week in February to offer information on how school counselors can help all students and families with academic support, social development, and career planning.
The special week provides recognition for these professionals who implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.
"School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career awareness in post-secondary options and social/emotional skills,” said ASCA executive director Kwok-Sze Wong, Ed.D. “Comprehensive school counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success."
The counselors are active in supporting student achievement and providing guidance lessons on building good character and other topics like bullying prevention. They also lead groups of students to solve problems, sponsor evening events to promote higher education, participate in intervention programs, and coordinate testing and other student services.
