OAK WOODS FOURTH GRADER CLAIMS AREA SPELLING BEE CHAMPIONSHIP

January 20, 2022

Anshi Prasai, a fourth grader at Oak Woods School, won the Area Spelling Bee on January 20, 2022, at the Granbury ISD Administration Building.

Prasai and Preston Kirkland, an eighth grader at Granbury Middle School, battled for 38 rounds before Prasai emerged the victor on the word “jitterbug.”

The area contest pitted campus-level winners from seven Granbury campuses.  Other competitors were:  Remi Bennett, fifth grader at Baccus Elementary School; Harper Brown, fourth grader at Acton Elementary School; Titus Cave, fifth grader at Brawner Elementary School; Maria Hustak, fifth grader at STEAM Academy at Mambrino; Brendan Thorne, sixth grader at Acton Middle School.  Also competing was Lipan student Katherine Self.

As the Hood County area champion, Prasai advances to the regional contest scheduled for March 8 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.  That contest will feature more than thirty contestants who won at the area level.  The regional winner will have an opportunity to compete in the national competition to be held in Washington, D.C. in May.

The campus and district spelling bees were open to all students under the age of sixteen who had not passed beyond the eighth grade.
