Kelby Been, a graduating senior at Granbury High School, was the big winner of a $10,000 scholarship from the Granbury ISD Education Foundation during Senior Awards Night on May 16, 2019.
A Lady Pirate softball player, Been received the college scholarship as one of twenty-four GEF Scholar Athletes selected not only for their involvement in high school athletics but also for their academic achievements. They represent a cross-section of GHS athletic teams.
Been is the daughter of Kelly Been and the late Monty Been. In addition to athletics, Been is involved with HOSA-Future Health Professionals, National Honor Society, and Spanish National Honor Society. She is graduating as a Top Ten student in the Class of 2019.
Been was named Academic All-State for softball, WFAA Channel 8 High School Spirit of Texas Scholar Athlete, Optimist Young TexAnne, and a UIL Scholar. She also received the President’s Educational Achievement Award and Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.
Other GEF Scholar Athletes honored during the evening ceremony were Sean Athcue, Makaul Barbaree, Kinsey Brawner, Koltin Bush, Jaxon Castillo, Landree Chiles, Lyndee Chiles, Hunter Dewey, Blaine Dixon, Courtney Gilley, Lani Hickey, Jake Holbrook, Rachel McWilliams, Jake Piland, Yari Press, Emily Rees, Louisa Rodriguez, Maddi Samuelson, McKenzie Scott, Sam Shade, Tyler Sheppard, Areli Silva, and Chandler Steele.
“We are grateful for the generous donation made by Mr. and Mrs. Durant,” commented GEF board president Stacy Mitchell, who added that scholarships will likely continue in the coming years with further donations. The Durants own a number of car dealerships and are also involved in Thoroughbred horse racing.
