FIVE GHS STUDENT ATHLETES MAKE COLLEGE COMMITMENTS

Five Granbury High School student athletes announced college plans during staggered signing ceremonies on April 28, 2020.
The signings were held separately due to the school closure and health restrictions following the COVID-19 pandemic. Students and families were present along with coaches, who only briefly stepped in for the signing and pictures.
Announcing their college plans were:
Payton Bell – women’s volleyball, University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma
Macie Blohowiak – women’s soccer, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburgh, Texas
Alyssa Gomez – women’s soccer, Blinn College in Brenham, Texas
Alexus Manzano – women’s soccer, Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri
Laynee Pence – women’s soccer, Blinn College in Brenham, Texas
The UTRGV Vaqueros compete in NCAA Division I in the Western Athletic Conference, while the UCO Bronchos are in NCAA Division II as part of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. In the NAIA, the Missouri Valley Vikings play in the Heart of America Conference. The Blinn Buccaneers are members of the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Region XIV.
Joining the student athletes were their parents – Chuck and Robin Bell, Jeremy and Norma Blohowiak, Jerad and Toni Gomez, Aron and Angela Manzano, Jody and Laura Pence – and other family members. Also present were: Lady Pirate Soccer head coach David Winkleman and assistant coaches Leah Haley and Emily Schigut; Lady Pirate Volleyball head Desiree Shahan and assistant coaches Alex Oppenborn and Katie Cowan; and club sports coaches.
