MASON LEWIS NAMED GOLF ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
June 7, 2021
Granbury High School student Mason Lewis was named the 2020-21 Golf Athlete of the Year for Class 5A and 6A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
Lewis, who is now a senior, captured the state championship at the UIL state golf tournament on May 10-11 at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.
She shot a personal best of 68, finishing 3 under par and leading the Class 5A contenders after the first round. On the second day, Lewis shot 70 to complete the two-day tourney 4 under par. She took first place by one stroke over Midlothian's Tiffany Cao (141) while Julia Vollmer (142) from Alamo Heights was third.
Lewis advanced from the Region I-5A meet in Lubbock after placing sixth individually, earning her the state bid as the third-place medalist among players not advancing with a team. The Lady Pirates placed sixth as well.
At the district tournament in March, the Lady Pirates placed second. Lewis was first individually, with teammates Taylor Lawrence, Madison Kirk, and Lily Myers also finishing in the top ten.
