Hundreds of Granbury ISD students enjoyed performances by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra on February 26, 2019, at Granbury High School’s Bagby-McMahan Performing Arts Center.

The morning program for fourth and fifth graders from Acton Elementary School, Baccus Elementary, Brawner Intermediate School, Oak Woods School, and STEAM Academy at Mambrino was “Folk Songs and the Symphony.”

The ensemble began with traditional folk songs, including “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” before moving on to orchestral pieces by Antonín Dvořák, Gustav Holst, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and others.

Both performances included narration and other remarks to educate the students about the musical literature.  The orchestra was led by conductor Alejandro Gómez Guillén.

“We were delighted to have the orchestra in Granbury to provide a first-hand experience for our students,” commented GISD superintendent Dr. Jeremy Glenn.  “I commend our school board trustees for supporting this arts education initiative.  We look forward to a continued partnership with the orchestra, and we appreciate their willingness to travel to Granbury for this extraordinary opportunity for our students.”

Organizing the presentation for the school district was the GISD curriculum department director Sharon Williams, who also obtained a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts to partially fund the concerts.
