“BROADWAY FOR KIDS” DELIGHTS ELEMENTARY STUDENTS

May 16, 2022

Granbury High School theater students thrilled fourth and fifth grade students during presentations of Junie B. Jones JR on May 13-14, 2022.

The musical centers on “Junie B. on her first day of first grade, where many changes are in store: Junie's best friend Lucille has found new best friends -— and Junie B. makes friends with Herb, the new kid at school,” according to Music Theatre International. “While in Mr. Scary's class, Junie has trouble reading the blackboard — and she may need glasses. Add in a friendly cafeteria lady, an intense kickball tournament and a ‘Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal,’ and first grade has never been more exciting.”

Amy Adams starred as the title character created in the beloved children’s books by Barbara Park.

Others in the cast were Jack Barefoot, Mason Covert, River Croley, Caleb Fisher, Alexander Funk, Katie Lou Funk, Kennedy Griffin, Bella Guzman, Liz Heil, Hayden Hoon, Aiden Jordan, Ashton Lemens, Shylee Porter, Gage Ramos, Abbie Stone, Jillian Tremble, Evie Watson, and Apollo White.

GHS theater arts teachers Mark Weeks and Melissa Hutson led the production.  Student crew members were:  Levi Reese, stage manager; Emily Pyle, lighting; Brennan Fisher, sound; Cameron Moore, soundtrack; Mason Holder, projections; Vincena Callaway and Trevor Jackson, spotlights.

The musical was funded by a $2,200 grant entitled “Broadway for Kids” from the Granbury ISD Education Foundation.

Presented by special arrangement with MTI, the production is based on Parks’ books with book and lyrics by Marcy Heisler and music by Zina Goldrich.

GHS theater students previously toured GISD elementary schools in February 2016 and December 2019 with The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley JR.
