GHS WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AT F1 IN SCHOOLS CONTEST

Affinity F1, one of the Formula One in Schools teams from Granbury High School team, won the national competition on May 15-16, 2015, at the Michigan International Speedway. The students will be representing the United States in the world finals for the third year in a row.
 
The team is advancing to the 2015 World Finals to be held September 13-16 in Singapore. The competition will bring students from more than forty countries to Southeast Asia “in a combined display of talent ahead of a blistering final showdown where the winning teams will be crowned.”
 
This marks the third straight year for GHS to qualify for the international contest. The competition was held in Abu Dhabi last year. In 2013, the United States hosted the competition in Austin.
 
At nationals, a second squad, Summit F1, won Best Team Identity, honoring the group for things such as uniforms, professionalism, and sportsmanship.
 
“Both teams had a great showing at the national competition. I couldn't be more proud of them and how they carried themselves during the two-day competition,” commented sponsor Todd Gibson, who was assisted by Granbury ISD career and technical education director Judy Gentry. “As we finish out the school year, Affinity Racing will be working hard to restructure their car and the other many components needed for the world finals. As national champions, we hope that our community will jump behind us again along with other corporate sponsors as we raise money for our competition in Singapore.”

Team Affinity is composed of Hayden Coppenbarger, Kayla Curtis, Tyler Johnson, Daniel Valdez, Tommy Wallace, and Clay Walters. Those on Team Summit are Tucker Cole, Glenn Rodgers, Jonathan Sager, Blake Steinmann, Cade Timmons, Chevie Van Patten, and Cooper Wallace.
 
In January, Affinity placed first and Summit took second at the Texas regional contest at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. The Affinity squad not only won Grand Champion honors but also awards for best pit display and best portfolio.
 
F1 in Schools is a multi-disciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged 9 to 19 deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, design, analyze, manufacture, test, and then race miniature gas-powered balsa wood F1 cars. The challenge inspires students to use technology to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture, branding, graphics, sponsorship, marketing, leadership/teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, imaginative, competitive and exciting way.
