GISD ENGINEERING PROGRAM SHOWCASED AT OPEN HOUSE

Project Lead the Way (PLTW), an innovative series of engineering courses offered in Granbury ISD schools, was showcased during an open house on May 22, 2014, at Granbury High School.
 
PLTW prepares students to be productive leaders and to make meaningful, pioneering contributions to our world. The program provides a rigorous education through an engaging, hands-on curriculum and helps students develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking, creative and innovative reasoning, and a love of learning.
 
Engineering students most recently applied their knowledge and skills in the F1 in Schools national competition, winning second place at the Michigan International Speedway and advancing to the 2014 World Finals to be held November 14-23 at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. This marked the second year for a Granbury team to advance to both the national and world level.
 
In the classes, GHS and Crossland students are building contraptions, learning about drafting and graphic design on the computer, using real lab equipment, and having fun doing it. Assistance and mentoring is provided by partner Luminant and professional engineers from the Comanche Peak Power Plant.
 
Both schools offer an introductory class on engineering design. Students continue through the sequence at the high school with an engineering principles course.  Advanced classes center on civil engineering and architecture, engineering design and development, engineering mathematics.
 
Acton Middle School and Granbury Middle School students are getting a head start on PLTW through Gateway To Technology (GTT) classes that include an activity-oriented program designed to challenge and engage the natural curiosity of middle school students. The program is taught in conjunction with a rigorous academic curriculum that includes courses on design and modeling, electrons, the science of technology, and automation and robotics.
 
Leading the charge in the classroom are GHS teachers Jud Griffith, Greg Belleau, and Todd Gibson. GTT teachers are Jon Allen and Scott Carpenter at AMS and Gibson at GMS.
 
Students who will attend middle school during the 2014-15 school year have the opportunity to attend a four-day summer technology camp on June 23-26 at GMS. For more information, go to www.granburyisd.org/techcamp.
