AIRCRAFT PROJECT TO CHALLENGE GISD STUDENTS
April 1, 2016

An innovative aircraft project will soon be
challenging Granbury High School aviation and engineering students.
Eagle's Nest Projects provide students a unique,
inspiring, and empowering Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
education experience through the beginning-to-end construction of a modern FAA
certified Light Sport aircraft (Van's Aircraft RV-12) with full glass
instrumentation, 2-axis auto-pilot, and all the latest safety features. Every
aspect of construction, sheet metal, fiberglass, wiring, and engine controls
are completed by the students.
The program utilizes an extensive network of
mentors and educators who live our motto, "Mentors build the student...
students build the Aircraft.” The number
of retired pilots and aircraft owners in the Granbury area was an incentive to
join the initiative, according to Granbury ISD superintendent Dr. James
Largent.
The organization will pay for half of the kit with
other money raised for partnering businesses, with only minimal cost to the
school district. The sale of the planes
could fund future year projects.
Eagle's Nest Projects also inspire student, school,
and community pride. Taking full advantage of the aircraft's removable wings
and trailering features, each build-project is regularly displayed at the
build-campus, other area schools, local businesses, fly-ins, major air shows,
and community activities.
A non-profit organization, Eagle’s Nest Projects
partners with Project Lead The Way, the current engineering program at GHS and
Crossland. Other partners include NASA,
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Jet Blue Airways, the Aircraft Owners and
Pilots Association, and the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Regional Airport during an initial meeting in March. The aircraft was built by students at Clear
Springs High School in the Houston area.
