GHS TEAM COMPETES AT STATE BARBECUE COMPETITION
May 4, 2022
Granbury High School students competed at a state barbecue competition on April 30, 2022, at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
Competing was the “Seriously Smokin’” team including culinary students Devin Celmo, Maddy Hidalgo, Elroy King, and Isabella Sanchez.
Placing tenth overall, the squad brought home a first-place trophy for its beans entry, according to GHS culinary teacher Brianne Langdon.
The team advanced from regional competition on April 1-2 at Mansfield ISD’s Ben Barber Innovation Academy in the Texas High School BBQ contest, which requires teams to prepare chicken, ribs, brisket, beans, and dessert.
This cross-curricular project stems from a 2018 grant from the Granbury ISD Education Foundation to help teach planning, teamwork, and communication in multi-faceted groups.
On Thursday, May 12, the team along with other culinary and business students will host a pop-up restaurant as the “Galley-on-the-Go” returns to the Granbury Square Plaza just off the courthouse square. Barbecue plate lunches will be available from 11:30 A.M. until 1:30 P.M. Tickets are $20 each, and advance reservations are required by May 10.
