BOND STEERING COMMITTEE REVIEWS CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS
November 7, 2014

Members of the steering
committee that developed the November 2013 bond proposal had a chance to view
progress on the construction a year after passage of the $84.9 million initiative. The walk-through tour of schools was held on November
7, 2014.
The group visited Acton
Elementary School, Acton Middle School, and Oak Woods School to see first-hand
how the projects have come to reality.
For the elementary and middle
school campuses, the big improvements include controlled entry vestibules to
improve campus security. With the secure
entries, visitors are now required to report to the campus office in order to
present identification before being granted access to the main part of the
school.
Construction began in May at the
schools, and most are near complete with contractors finishing minor “punch
list” items. Because of the larger scope
of work at Oak Woods, completion is now scheduled for mid-December. Rather than simple renovations to the
existing office area, that project required a small addition to the front of
the building.
The tour participants also viewed
impressive new technology installed for model classrooms as well as the future
site of the new gymnasium at Acton Elementary School.
The district had hoped to
begin construction on gyms for AES and Emma Roberson Elementary School during the
summer. However, due to larger than
expected costs, the two gyms were postponed and rolled into a larger high
school project to provide better financing through “economies of scale.” The two projects will begin in March 2015.
In addition to campus
security and the two elementary gyms, the bond program addresses transforming
Granbury High School, enhancing career and technical education and fine arts
programs, building a robust technology infrastructure, and many other
improvements. Construction at the high
school will begin on November 17 and continue through several phases until
Summer 2016.
Attending along with superintendent
Dr. James Largent were campus principals, facilities director Randy Leach,
school board president Mark Jackson, and school trustee-elect Chris Tackett. Bond committee members participating were
Gary Best, Todd Garner, Mike Scott, and Barbara Townsend. Pictured above at Oak Woods are (left to right) Best, Largent, Scott, Tackett, and Jackson.
The steering committee will
tour other campus projects throughout construction. Additional information about the bond is available at www.granburyisd.org/bond.
