Administration Annex Demolition

 

Demolition of an old Granbury ISD school building most recently utilized as the district’s Administration Annex began on March 9, 2018. 

 

The demolition of the aging structure was originally scheduled for early October but was delayed due to asbestos abatement, city permitting, and weather.  The work does not include the historic Decker Gym, which will remain at the corner of Bridge and Hannaford Streets.

 

A Highest and Best Use Study conducted by the Institute of Urban Studies at the University of Texas at Arlington was presented to the GISD school board a year ago. The analysis reviewed options for district-owned properties including the Annex, located at 600 W. Bridge Street, as well as 210 N. Jones Street, which is currently used as Weatherford College Education Center at Granbury.

 

The study took into consideration several factors: potential expansion of Weatherford College; move of GISD administration to the former Crossland Ninth Grade Center campus; historic nature of Decker Gym; potential conveyance to City of Granbury of open space and football field on north end of the property; reuse/repurpose of remaining school district buildings on property.

 

The six-month study was conducted by an interdisciplinary team of six members with background and skills in construction, valuation, architecture, and planning. In addition to the survey, the team conducted site visits and analysis, market analysis, and additional research.

 

The process included an extensive community survey as well as the convening of a steering committee that included community representatives as well as city, chamber, and college officials.

 

School trustees authorized superintendent Dr. James Largent to negotiate with Weatherford College on some of the properties – specifically its current site in the old two-story elementary school plus the old cafeteria known as the Bridge Street Conference Center.  The board further authorized the superintendent to sell or lease the old superintendent’s office (1935 red brick building) at 600 W. Pearl Street.  That facility has since been leased to the Forward Training Center.

In August, school board members approved a job order contract in August. The cost of $154,859.34 will come from the district’s maintenance budget but may also include fund balance reserves if necessary.  Some expenses may be recouped from Weatherford College and other entities that may be interested in the property. 

 

GISD held a public sale in September for surplus property and furniture in the building, and many items were purchased through the sale.  In addition, the district hosted an “open house” during Granbury High School Homecoming to allow the public and former students time to tour the former school.

 

School officials remain in discussion with the City of Granbury regarding the future of the Bridge Street property.
