Acton Elementary School fourth graders raised over $5,000 for the renovation of the Hood County Library during a pancake fundraiser on April 13, 2018, at Hood County Annex I.

Fourth grade student council representatives pitched the service project idea to county commissioners last month.  Commissioners quickly approved the students’ request, which is in conjunction with the Granbury ISD Day of Service community service initiative implemented by the school district.

Students planned, budgeted, advertised, and served pancakes to the public to raise donations for the library project, according to teacher Shanna McPherson.

The fundraiser was a rousing success, bringing in $5,082 with most coming from the morning event.  An additional $275 was raised online through the Go Fund Me website, which still is accepting charitable donations for the library foundation at www.gofundme.com/hclibrary.

Granbury Lions Club members were instrumental in helping with the fundraiser, bringing the club’s large rotating griddle to fix all the pancakes, which were served along with other fixings and juice by the students.  The school also credited Hood County commissioners, Hood County Library Foundation, H-E-B grocery store, and the Acton Elementary PTO for assistance with the fundraiser.

County officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for the library expansion in late January.  The project, which is expected to be completed in the fall, will add 10,000 square feet to the back of the library building.

“A larger library will include additional books, videos, audio books, DVDs, and reference materials,” said teacher Deborah Sullivan.  “There will be additional public use computers, meeting rooms that local non-profits can use for free, and additional reading and study areas.  These changes will benefit the county in general and students in particular.”
