GISD SCHOOL TRUSTEES MOVE FORWARD WITH PROPERTY FOR NEW HIGH SCHOOL

March 1, 2022

The Granbury ISD Board of Trustees moved forward with purchasing property for a prospective new high school during its regular monthly meeting on February 28, 2022.

If approved by voters in May, a new high school campus will be built at the property located at 4734 Acton Highway (FM 4) near the intersection of James Road.  Two tracts of land comprising 73.178 acres and 12.674 acres are located adjacent to the Acton Middle School.  The board action authorizes board president Barbara Townsend and superintendent Dr. Jeremy Glenn to finalize the land purchase.

Dr. Glenn explained that preliminary plans would allow access to the campus from both Acton Highway and James Road as well as a planned four-lane road called Hurricane Fly, which will extend from Fall Creek Highway through the Saratoga subdivision and then just north of the current AMS campus and connecting to Acton Highway on the west.  The district will construct a two-lane road on the west side of the school for additional traffic flow.

Scheduled for May 7, the $394 million bond election will include the new GHS campus for 3,500 students with career and technical education as well as athletic components.  The plan would lead to the conversion of the existing GHS and middle schools into a junior high and elementary campuses respectively.  Baccus Elementary would become a second early learning academy for full-day pre-kindergarten.  Renovation of all current elementary schools would also be included. According to financial projections, the proposal would require a 20-cent property tax rate increase.

In personnel, the board extended contracts for district and campus administrators. The board also approved the appointment of a new federal programs coordinator and a new teacher at Granbury Middle School.  Trustees received notice of employees resigning or retiring at the end of the school year.  In addition, the board approved a resolution to pay non-exempt employees for three days when the district was closed due to inclement weather.

Reports to the board included:

  • Glenn reported that COVID-19 cases are low among GISD students and staff. The superintendent thanked principals for their leadership in academics and instruction while navigating a number of challenges. Dr. Glenn also celebrated DECA students competing and state competition.
  • Budget assumptions for the 2022-23 fiscal year were reviewed by chief financial officer Emmett Whitefield, who is preparing the budget with an estimated 4% growth in student enrollment. He also outlined a calendar for the budget development process prior to adoption in August.
  • Whitefield presented financial and cash flow statements for January 2022.

The board also approved budget amendments.  Board members approved the purchase of child nutrition kitchen appliances and equipment as well career and technical education supplies and equipment.  Trustees also named Snow Garrett Williams, CPA as the independent auditor for the 2021-22 fiscal year.

Donations reported to the board included:  $6,314 from the Oak Woods PTO and $9,184 from Acton Elementary PTO for charter bus travel for Austin field trips; $4,000 from Granbury First United Methodist Church to fund breakfast and lunch at Baccus Elementary School’s Saturday school; $1,335.34 from the Daughters of the American Revolution – Elizabeth Crockett Chapter for the Granbury Marine Corps JROTC; $1,122.10 from Mark Franco, $709 from Lake Granbury Marina, $303.30 from TEA 2 GO, and $500 from Jon Brumley all to the Granbury Robotic team.

Out-of-district travel requests approved included: GHS volleyball tournament in Orlando on August 31-September 4; Granbury Marine Corps JROTC rifle team trip to Anniston, Alabama on March 30-April 3.

The board moved the April meeting from Monday, April 18 to Monday, April 25.

Trustees next convene for the regular monthly meeting on Monday, March 21. Board meetings are held in the GISD Board Room located in the Administration Building at 217 N. Jones Street.
