UIL DISTRICT DECISION VACATES GRANBURY FOOTBALL WIN
November 4, 2020
The Granbury Pirate football victory over Crowley has been vacated following a UIL Division I District 3-5A Executive Committee decision on November 3, 2020.
The UIL district committee reviewed circumstances regarding an individual football player who suited up and competed in the October 15 contest. The player had been academically ineligible after the first six weeks but was set to return to the team.
However, a district calendar change led to the miscalculation on the exact return date, as GISD added several student holidays to provide teachers and staff with more planning time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The issue was also complicated by the Granbury-Crowley game occurring on Thursday night because the player would have been eligible had the game occurred on Friday.
GISD athletic director Dwight Butler immediately reported the issue to the district chairman after reviewing the school district calendar and realizing the error. “We hate this for the players because this was an administrative error on our part,” commented Butler. “We appreciate the prompt consideration of the District Executive Committee, and we understand the decision.”
Vacating the victory leaves the Pirates with a 0-3 record in District 3-5A with the next contest scheduled for Friday, November 6 at Azle. Following that, Granbury will host Northwest, travel to Fort Worth for a contest against Arlington Heights, and then conclude the regular season versus Saginaw in a newly rescheduled matchup at Globe Life Park in Arlington during Thanksgiving weekend.
