TRUSTEES EXTEND SUPERINTENDENT’S CONTRACT, HEAR BOND REPORT

June 17, 2014

The Granbury ISD Board of Trustees approved a contract extension for superintendent Dr. James Largent and heard a report on bond construction during its regular monthly meeting on June 16, 2014.

Dr. James Largent The board action followed trustees completing a summative evaluation of the district’s leader, whose three-year contract now extends through June 2017. As part of the contract action, Largent will receive a new base salary of $185,000. All other terms of the superintendent’s existing contract remain unchanged.

“The board is very pleased with Dr. Largent’s performance over the last year,” said board president Mark Jackson. “Looking beyond the tangible measures of leading a successful bond initiative and numerous academic, athletic, and fine arts successes, Dr. Largent has simply restored a high level of enthusiasm and positive outlook for the future of Granbury ISD. We are proud to have such an able leader.”

In setting the new salary, the board considered current compensation levels for superintendents leading similar-sized school districts in the Fort Worth and Dallas area.

Trustees also heard a bond construction update from Scott Barnes, project manager for the Buford-Thompson Company. Barnes stated that work has already begun on the controlled entry vestibules at all GISD elementary and middle schools.  Earlier this month, the board approved $3.605 million as the guaranteed maximum price for these projects.

Granbury ISD Bond The secure entries are set for completion prior to the start of the school year – except for Oak Woods School. Because of the larger scope of work at that campus, completion is scheduled for November. Rather than simple renovations to the existing office area, the Oak Woods project required a small addition to the front of the building.

New gymnasiums for Acton Elementary School and Emma Roberson Elementary School have been postponed until Summer 2015 and are being rolled into the larger high school project to provide better financing through “economies of scale.”

BTC is the construction manager at-risk for all GISD bond projects and is working alongside the Huckabee architectural firm. Plans are still under development for the transformation of and additions to Granbury High School, with construction planned to begin in late fall and last through August 2016.

In addition, assistant superintendent for finance and operations Dobie Williams presented a bond expenditure report as of the end of May. The financial recap and the BTC timeline are posted on the district website at www.granburyisd.org/bond.

During an afternoon training session, the board and superintendent reviewed progress on the district’s G2020 strategic plan, which covers major initiatives for community partnerships and resources, curriculum, facilities, professional development, project based learning, scheduling, and technology. The plan and progress documents are available online at www.granburyisd.org/2020.

In other action, the board approved the appointment of staff positions and received notification of resignations and retirements. Financial reports for April 2014 were reviewed by Williams. Trustees also approved board meeting dates through June 2015. The calendar and list of meetings are available at www.granburyisd.org/schoolboard.

Board members approved minutes from the last regular meeting and a recent special meeting, budget amendments, and bids and purchases for: band instruments; science supplies and equipment; vehicle fuel; athletic supplies for winter sports; music, band, and choir supplies.

Budget amendments included several donations: $100 in individual contributions for travel by the F1 in Schools team; $613 from the Mambrino PTO for supplies to install a new electronic marquee; $5,079 from the Baccus PTO for a new projector for the school cafeteria; $34,563 from the Granbury ISD Education Foundation to fund various grants and other awards.

Trustees will next meet for a regular monthly meeting and a budget workshop on Monday, July 21. Board meetings are held in the GISD Board Room located next to the Administration Building at 600 W. Pearl Street.
