STATEMENT ON DISTRICT AIRPLANE

November 19, 2022

Granbury ISD issued the following statement on a recent news media article regarding the district airplane:

Assistant superintendent Jimmy Dawson is one of two licensed pilots listed on the district insurance policy as he provides demonstration flights for students. Pilots are required by the FAA to conduct 3 takeoffs and 3 landings every 3 months, and the district encourages its pilots to fly often enough to be proficient at the airplane and keep it in mechanical shape for flights with students.  In 2022, Mr. Dawson flew the airplane 6 times including 3 student demonstrations.

The district tightened flight protocols and strengthened flight documentation effective September 2022.

The district remains confident in the aviation program’s ability to grow students academically, socially, and emotionally, as well as open the door to significant career opportunities.
