Scotty Pugh, head football coach for the Granbury Pirates, has accepted
a position as head coach and athletic director with Orange Grove High School in
the Corpus Christi area. The
announcement was made on June 2, 2016.
"This is one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make - leaving the kids at Granbury ISD," said the football coach. "I love these kids and what we have done for this program. Opportunity doesn't always knock, but I felt this was the right opportunity at the right time."
Pugh came to Granbury High School in 2008 and led the Pirates to four
straight playoff seasons from 2010-2013 during his eight-year stint leading the
football program.
“We wish Coach
Pugh all the best at Orange Grove and thank him for his service in Granbury,”
commented GISD superintendent Dr. James Largent. “He came to GHS
and made major improvements in our football program, taking us to the playoffs
four years in a row – something that GHS had not done in many years.
From 2004-2008, Pugh served as co-offensive coordinator at Highland
Park High School. In this capacity, he
also has coached the quarterbacks and receivers. During his tenure, the team won the Class 4A
Division I state championship in 2005 and was a state finalist in Class 4A
Division II in 2007.
Pugh’s previous high school coaching experience includes stints at
A&M Consolidated High School and Abilene Cooper High School. At both schools, he had responsibility for
the defensive backs during football season, but he also served as head coach of
the baseball team. Prior to coaching at
the high school level, Pugh was lead camp instructor at Keith Moreland’s
Baseball Academy of Texas. He also
coached quarterbacks and defensive backs at Hardin-Simmons University.
A native of Abilene, he graduated from Cooper
High School, where he lettered in three sports and was an All-State
quarterback, an All-State and All-American baseball player, and an All-District
basketball player. From 1991 until 1996,
he was a minor league baseball player for teams associated with the San Diego
Padres, Chicago Cubs, and Colorado Rockies.
In 1997, he received a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from the
University of Texas. In college, he was
recognized as an All-American and All-Southwest Conference baseball player.
“We have already
begun the search for our new head football coach, and we feel confident that we
will have many qualified applicants who will want to become part of the Pirate
Nation,” Largent said.
