An Acton Middle School team competed at the
Odyssey of the Mind world competition on May 24-27, 2017, at Michigan State
included: eighth graders Wesley Barefoot, Taylor Lawrence, and Adam Stone;
seventh graders Lacy Criswell and McKenna Smith; sixth graders Jack Barefoot
and Katie Lou Funk. The group advanced after placing first at the
state-level event on April 8 at Waller High School.
At Michigan State, the AMS students competed with 850 teams from around
the world and earned high marks for long-term and spontaneous problem solving
skills in their problem and division.
“It was an amazing
opportunity to meet and compete with students from around the world, make
memories, and prove that hard work and dedication brings fantastic results,”
commented AMS teach and team coach Kerry Barefoot.
Odyssey of the Mindis an international educational program that
provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten
through college. Team members apply
their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices
to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to
competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from
throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the
