An Acton Middle School team competed at the Odyssey of the Mind world competition on May 24-27, 2017, at Michigan State University.

The team included: eighth graders Wesley Barefoot, Taylor Lawrence, and Adam Stone; seventh graders Lacy Criswell and McKenna Smith; sixth graders Jack Barefoot and Katie Lou Funk.  The group advanced after placing first at the state-level event on April 8 at Waller High School.

At Michigan State, the AMS students competed with 850 teams from around the world and earned high marks for long-term and spontaneous problem solving skills in their problem and division.

“It was an amazing opportunity to meet and compete with students from around the world, make memories, and prove that hard work and dedication brings fantastic results,” commented AMS teach and team coach Kerry Barefoot.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college.  Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.  They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
