GHS PBL SHOWCASE AND STEM FAMILY NIGHT SET FOR APRIL 10

March 31, 2017

GHS PBL Showcase

Granbury High School will host both a PBL Showcase and STEM Family Night on Monday, April 10, 2017, from 5:30-7:00 P.M.

A variety of classes will feature Project Based Learning during the evening event in the foyer and Learning Commons, according to instructional specialist Jayme Duckett.  Students will have the opportunity to show their work.

The Buck Institute for Education defines Project Based Learning as a systematic teaching method that engages students in learning important knowledge and 21 century skills through an extended, student-influenced inquiry process structured around complex, authentic questions and carefully designed projects and learning tasks.

GISD promotes PBL so that students are experiencing true 21st century learning. The initiative developed through the district’s GISD 2020 strategic plan finalized in 2013.  One of the strategic objectives from the plan is to implement PBL “to enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication in an optimal environment.”

STEM Family Night

Also that evening will be STEM Family Night, which is an exciting event designed to ignite an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The event is geared to be interesting to all ages and will highlight fun and educational activities and demonstrations. Students will learn through interactive hands-on activities that include F1 in Schools race cars, robots, magnets, and neurons, as well as everyday products and household materials.

The program will be hosted by GHS WIT & POWER SET students along with teachers from Baccus Elementary School, GHS career and technical education, Comanche Peak Power Plant, and Tarleton State University’s Society of Physics Students.

The event is sponsored by NPI, which is a unique statewide partnership led by the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) and based at Texas A&M University.

Both the PBL Showcase and STEM Family Night are free and open to the public.
