NEW HEAD COACHES NAMED FOR GHS SOFTBALL, TENNIS TEAMS

May 28, 2021

Katie Cowan and Connor Mason

Two new head coaches will be leading Granbury High School athletic teams beginning in the 2021-22 school year.

Katie Cowan and Connor Mason are new head coaches for the softball and tennis programs respectively. The two could succeed Ashley Benson (softball) and Tim Brewer (tennis), who both came to Granbury in 2017.

Cowan is currently an assistant coach for the Lady Pirates in both softball and volleyball.  A native of Cleburne, she was a four-year varsity letterman for the Yellow Jackets and then went on to play for North Central Texas College, which made program history by competing at the national level.  After graduating from Northwood University as a starting pitcher with All-Conference honors, Cowan first coached in Malakoff before coming to GHS in 2018.

“Katie has been an integral part of our successful softball program,” commented GISD athletic director Dwight Butler.  “She worked hand in hand with our outgoing coach and displayed quite a bit of passion necessary to continue building the program.”

Mason is a graduate of Saginaw High School and East Texas Baptist University, where he played tennis four years and served as team captain under former GHS head coach Jeff Bramlett.  As a student teacher in Elysian Fields, he led a student-athlete to the state tennis tournament for the first time in school history.  Mason has taught and coaches at Cleburne High School for the past three years, teaching social studies and serving as the coordinator for the AVID college preparatory program.  As a varsity assistant, he has helped lead the Yellow Jacket team to the playoffs twice.

“We have watched Connor play tennis since high school,” Butler said.  “He brings some innovative ideas to improve our tennis program.  Connor is a young, passionate leader who comes highly recommended, and we look forward to having him at GHS.”
