MARINE CORPS JROTC CADETS RECEIVE AWARDS

Granbury Marine Corps JROTC cadets from Granbury High School attended an awards ceremony on April 28, 2022, in the GHS auditorium.

Local military organizations presented scholarships to top cadets: 

  • American Legion Post 278 Bronze Medal:  Richard Layland for military excellence and Parker Haydin for scholastic excellence ($1,000 scholarships)
  • American Legion Post 491 Gold Medals: Alexis De La Pena for military excellence and Sarah Folsom for scholastic excellence ($500 scholarships)
  • American Legion Post 491 Bronze Medals: Ashton Arlington for military excellence and Tyler Milligan for scholastic excellence ($200 scholarships)
  • Commander Burns Academic Excellence Award:  Zachary Layland ($100 scholarship)
  • Daughters of the American Revolution/Elizabeth Crockett Chapter Bronze Medal:  Dianna Koch ($300 scholarship)
  • Friends of Memorial Lane Scholarships:  Alexis De La Pena and Tyler Milligan ($1,000 scholarships)
  • Granbury Marine Corps JROTC Booster Club Scholarship:  Alexis De La Pena and Tyler Milligan ($500 scholarships)
  • Marine Corps League/Comanche Peak Detachment Eagle Award:  Sarah Folosm ($1,000 scholarship)
  • Military Officers Association of America JROTC Scholarships:  Alexis De La Pena ($5,000 scholarship), Tyler Milligan ($3,000 scholarship), Sarah Folsom ($1,000 scholarship), Parker Haydin ($1,000 schlarship), Richard Layland ($1,000 scholarship)
  • Sons of the American Revolution/Brazos Valley Chapter JROTC Bronze Medal:  Mason Light ($300 scholarship)
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7835 JROTC Medal:  Gene Williams ($100 scholarship)

  • Top Marksmen Awards:  Top Female Cadet – Sage Smith; Top Male Cadet – Antony Garcia
  • Top Physical Fitness Test:  Top Female Cadet – Sarah Folsom; Top Male Cadet – Jett Burrell

Also recognized were cadets volunteering for military service.  Sarah Folsom will be attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point while Parker Haydin will attend the U.S. Naval Academy.  Enlistees include:  U.S. Army – Jett Burrell; U.S. Air Force – Tye Crawford; U.S. Marine Corps – Austin Brassie, Dylan Foard, Billy Hafford, Mason Light, Vanity Lopez, Fernando Ruiz-Contreras, Christian Sells.

A special presentation were made to the battalion for participation in the Wreaths Across America event.  In addition, state senator Brian Birdwell read a gubernatorial proclamation honoring the rifle team for its fifth-straight national championship.

The ceremony closed with commander Sarah Folsom handing the battalion flag off to the new commander Ashley Jimenez.

JROTC instructors are Lt. Col. Scott Casey and First Sergeant Johnny Rositas.
