The Granbury Marine Corps JROTC rifle teas competed in the National JROTC Championship on March 19-21, 2015, at Camp Perry, Ohio. The national-level contest featured the best JROTC units from all service branches.

Granbury High School was represented by Hunter Dowell, Tyler Morrissette, Cody Bogle, Kayla Hitshew, and Katherine Lambert in the 3×20 air rifle event, which featured competitors firing twenty record shots from three positions: prone, standing and kneeling over the two-day period.

The Granbury team shot 4589 out of a possible 4800 points placing them ninth in the all-service category and second among Marine Corps teams. Hitshew, a freshman at Crossland Ninth Grade Center, led the team with a personal best of 1149 out of 1200 possible points placing 37th in the all-service category and ninth among all Marine cadets.

“We are very proud of this team and their accomplishments. When you put it into perspective, our kids are the best out of over 8,000 shooters. That is an amazing achievement,” commented Lt. Col. Scott Casey, the Senior Marine Instructor. “I’m impressed on how well they did as a team moving up seven slots in the national rankings. That is unprecedented and is a true testament on how well they performed at the national match this past weekend.”

Going into the competition, Granbury was seeded 16th in the all-service category and fourth among Marine Corps teams based on the results from the regional competition held in February in Alabama.

“Our team goal at the beginning of the year was to make it to Nationals,” Casey remarked. “Now that we have accomplished that, our goal next year will be to bring home the championship trophy.”
