Students at Brawner Intermediate School held a morning flag raising ceremony and parade to honor Veterans Day on November 10, 2015.

A color guard unit representing the Granbury Marine Corps JROTC led the flag raising in the front of the campus as the school day began. The assembled students sang the National Anthem and recited the pledges to both the United States and Texas flags.

The special event was to educate the young students about Veterans Day as well as the sacrifices of U.S. armed forces veterans, according to principal Jincy Ross.

Special speakers were two retired U.S. Air Force officers. Col. Jim Phillips talked to the students about his service in Vietnam and elsewhere as well as the education needed to fulfill his duties. Phillips’s wife, Patty, previously taught physical education at the school.

Also speaking was Major Jeff Ghiglieri, who is married to the school’s assistant principal. Ghiglieri now teaches science to sixth graders at Granbury Middle School.

Ross also took time to recognize school receptionist Malika Scott, who previously served in the U.S. Navy.
