JROTC CYBERPATRIOT TEAM EXCELS IN SECURITY CONTEST
March 7, 2016

A Granbury Marine Corps JROTC team
recently concluded an exceptional round of competition in the eighth season of
CyberPatriot – the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition.
Led by Coach Angela Jumper, the
team of Granbury High School students excelled in in the CyberPatriot VIII
qualifying rounds, demonstrating teamwork, critical thinking skills, and
technical knowledge key to a successful career in cybersecurity. The team’s
performance earned it a spot representing the MCJROTC Division in the Category
Round held February 19-21, 2016.
Team members advancing to the next
round include Gunnar Brown, Joseph Dandridge, Aaron Dowell, Jason Kowalewski, G’Angela
Pickett, and Angela Shelly.
“These students are great to
work with, and it’s amazing to see their progress. They began in April and
worked through the summer taking few breaks. Their eyes are set on the big
prize, and, if they continue to work hard at the rate they are improving, they
will get there.” said Jumper. “I am very proud to be able to work with such a
fine group of cadets.”
Established by the Air Force
Association, the program was created to excite, educate, and motivate students
toward careers in cyber security and other science, technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to the future of the nation.
The competition challenges teams of
two to six students across the United States, Canada, and from Department of
Defense schools abroad to find and resolve cybersecurity vulnerabilities in
simulated environments. Top teams from the preliminary online rounds win an
all-expenses-paid trip to Baltimore for the finals.
